Walking Tips

Walking is a good way to start your day and a recommended way to start an exercise regimen.

The U.S. Surgeon General reports that a minimum of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity such as brisk walking can produce short- and long-term health benefits. The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports recommends at least 30 minutes a day, 5 or more days a week.

Here are a few tip to consider before you start walking:

Plan your time to walk by writing it down on your calendar as though it were an appointment and don’t be late for your walking appointment. Walking with a walking buddy is a good way to have accountability.

Always walk in a safe place during daylight hours and be sure to wear proper foot gear to avoid injuries. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothes, use sunscreen and be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses.

It is recommended to drink 1-1.5 cups of water for each 20 minutes of walking.

To help make your walks something that you look forward to – a good motivation would be to reward yourself with a special treat (for walking a specified amount of miles or a specified number of days). You might consider buying a new pair of walking clothes, shoes, a cd with upbeat music, maybe even an ipod. It has been proven that when listening to an upbeat tempo while you walk results in a faster walk which in turn equates to more calories burned.
