The Penny Story – Count Your Blessings

"The Penny Story – Count Your Blessings"

A few months ago, my wife and I where walking through the parking lot of our local grocery store. I looked down and saw a penny and walked right past it. For some reason, my mind dwelt on that silly little penny. Something kept telling me to pick it up. However, my pride kept telling me that someone might see me picking up pennies and think less of me.

We walked all the way to the entrance of the store and I told my wife to wait there for a moment. I ran back, picked up that penny and ran back to rejoin my wife. Perplexed, she asked what I did. I explained the little argument going on in my head between pride and wanting to pick up that penny. She paused silent for a moment and then asked to see the penny.

She held it up and smiled, then gave it back for me to put in my pocket as if I had found a great treasure.

While we shopped, the entire scene nagged at me. Finally, I could not stand it any longer. I had to ask my wife why she wanted to see the penny.

A smile crept across her face as she had me reach into my pocket again for the penny and hand it to her. She held it out for me to see. I had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

‘Look at it.’ she said. ‘Read what it says.’

I read the words ‘ United States of America ‘

‘No, not that; read further.’

‘One cent?’ ‘No, keep reading.’

‘In God we Trust?’ ‘Yes!’ ‘And?’

‘And if you trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin.

So here is the lesson I learned that day from God and my Wife.

Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him.

For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God’s way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, ‘In God We Trust,’ and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient…

Take a moment to let this sink in.

Count your blessings and you will see miracles happening in your life every single day. Keep this story on your mind and notice how many coins suddenly show up in your path, then take a moment to share with us.

  2. Alma says:

I just posted a prayer request about how God had just sent me a blessing, but that I was worried I wouldn’t be able to afford it and that I was afraid I may stop relying on God to help me afford it. I sent that about 10 minutes ago. This story shed a light on me. Thank you so much – someone must have prayed for me.

  3. torie says:

Before my mom passed away she told us to put pennies in the casket with her and when she got to heaven she would send them to us to let us know God loves us and and is always there watching us and so is she.
I have found many pennies in the last 3 1/2 years and always think of her in heaven. Now with this story I have a whole new awareness of Gods love and trust in him

  8. Paulette says:

Is it coincidence or what, that I just found a penny in the Home Depot parking lot yesterday. I picked it up and it was pretty “beat up” from cars driving over it again and again. Sometimes we feel “beat up” too, but now I’m looking at that penny in a much different light. It’s telling me thatf God wants me to know that if that penny can hold up thru all that so can I, with His help. I am going thru a very stressful time and I’m going to put all my worries into one “basket” and give it to God. Thanks for a wonderful story. I will never pass up another “message” from God.

i often find pennies on the ground . when i was young i heard when i picked up a coin to make a wish and it would come true. there no wounder why the wish’s come true. God greant the wish’s to come true ,but if it’s not his will they don’t come true. now i have a new outlook on finding coins. thanks Rick for your story if you had kept this story for yourself so many people wouldn’t have thought of the true meaning of : in God we trust. thanks again.

  11. Faye says:

As childred my Mother use to tell us, that when we saw a penny that it was pennies from Heaven. And since her passing when I see a penny I pick it up and say I Love You Mom and I thank God for all His Blessings. May we never be to proud to pick up those pennies and Trust In God.

  12. CARMEN says:

I just came back from the bank, trying to acquire a loan to buy a home. I did not get the answers I was hoping to hear, so I came back to my office a bit down. I went to my computer and this was the first of e-mails I began with. So all I saw was IN GOD I TRUST. AND I KNOW HE CONTINUES HIS BLESSINGS ALWAYS. THANK YOU

  13. thomas-sibi says:

  14. Michele says:

I always pick up penneys and think I am a little richer. Penneys make dollars, and God wanted me to fine this. Now when I fine a penney I will be thinking In God We Trust and how good he been to me. I write on my envelopes that I mail out In God We Trust because the post offices no longer can have this posted in there offices, and I pray this will continue on our money. It is not on our new President gold color dollar coins. I will not purchase these coins to pass on to my grandchilden because they are not a true America coin without IN God WE Trust on them.
Thank you, God Bless you all.

  15. tosir says:

  16. maria says:

The story of the penny shows how we at times see some person suffering & we carry on our way with out caring to stop but then all of a sudden something clicks which makes us turn back to give a helping hand to the afflicted. By thrusting in God we always do the right things.

May All the World have Faith in God, Thrust in God and Love God and so it will be a better World.

  17. Marlene Marshall says:

It is a good thing to see a glimpse of the Lord’s word in our everyday living. I am glad to see it on our money, because it passes through a lot of hands. Maybe someone else will see the same writing and pick up a penny, to see God’s word, is a precious thing. IN GOD WE TRUST is something we should always do.

  18. cam says:

it just goes to show that ordinary every day insignificant things can point us to God if we just take the time and heed to his still small voice.Evey thing around us points to God what a blessing!!!!

  19. Barb says:

Beautiful story. Thanks for reminding us that God blesses us in many ways – both large and small.

  20. Every day is a blessing when we trust in God .

I’ve also walked over pennies never picking them up this was my pride but thanks to this word i won’t have a problem anymore.
    IN GOD I TRUST

  21. Dahlia says:

Great inspirational lesson. Thank God that in him we trust and not in ourselves.

God bless each and everyone of us every single day – for each day brings a new beginning and a fresh start- all of which is God’s plan.

  22. Denise says:

I was always told when finding pennies, The phrase was always
“Pennies from Heaven” Naturally with its inscription what else could
    it be???
    IN GOD WE TRUST

  23. Claire Dugui-es says:

Pennies have little to buy but in little things comes big things. Now I pick up pennies that i used to ignore, and I thank God for the small things that I already have and big things to soon to come.

  24. Ehyse says:

I try as much as possible to always give thanks to the Holy Father for all blessings, big or small. Ignore nothing, as inspiration can be found in the smallest ordinary object -such a penny- as can be found in the most obvious.

  25. MERLIN says:

THANKS FOR THE INSPIRING STORY. IT HAS TAUGHT ME TO COUNT MY BLESSINGS HOWEVER SMALL & INSIGNIFICANT IT MIGHT SEEM AT THE PARTICULAR POINT OF TIME.

  26. Eloise says:

God works in different ways that we might not be aware of….and i think God challeges us to see things in a different way so that we can also be used as an instrument to help other people.

it is quite ironic when i use the quotation “money is the root of all evil” and then the penny which also is money serves us the reminder to Trust God…hmmm…maybe it’s not at all ironic because it could also be saying that even if you are bad money (let us not use the term evil) God wants us to return to Him and trust Him again, there is still that little message in that little money, there is still goodness in the blackest of hearts….

…just thinking…(^ ^;)…and if you get confused in my little babble…sorry(>///<)

  27. Keriah says:

Thank you for this great story and from now on, I will pick up every penny I find on the ground. Thanks

  32. george says:

the only solution to the global crisis is learning to trust God completely. the number one problem that creeps to people’s mind today is their finances that’s why God speak through money also…”IN GOD WE TRUST”. God wants us to entrust to him our finances.
As what the sign board says when you are driving….”KEEP RIGHT” yES, just make your life RIGHT before God by putting your TRUST in HIM! God bless!

  33. Juanita Martsolf says:

I am well aware the coins say “In Gor We Trust” and have found so many pennys and picked them up over my life. Once I wondered why we always find pennys and not other coins…..well the next time I stopped and got out of the car on a grey stone parking lot my eyes fell on a dime. I said thank you Lord. And later the next time there was a quarter and so on. But now I am back to a penny, but I still wonder why people drop pennies and not the other coins.

  34. ElsieNg-Rg says:

Wonderful, simply beautiful personal comments from all of you regarding nothing but this tiny US coin or PENNY with the special inscription saying… ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’. Of course, we must always trust GOD!

YES, although a penny is just a “small” coin with little value, it can become a big thing when accumulated and becomes valuable indeed! Sometimes, small things mean a lot… it’s the thought or quality that counts and not the quantity.

Our loving GOD works mysteriously and unexpectedly in everyone of us! Are we sensitive enough to grasp whatever comes along? We must always give thanks to GOD regardless of small or big things, and always place Him in the first place for everything we do, regardless of personal, financial, planning, etc.

GOD has His mysterious way of communicating with us through various happenings – friends, consequences and our intuition/conscience!
Are we sensitive to feel Him working in our lives?

May GOD bless all of you richly as you become more aware of His Presence in our daily lives. In fact, He is always there wherever we are because He lives in us! He is watching us closely every day!

    Thanks all for sharing! LoVe~lc~

  38. nichole says:

This is a story that truly opened my eyes. I have been finding coins not just pennies but nickels, dimes,a few quarters and a great deal of pennies. I became a new Christian and Believer in God December 7, 2009. I now realize that this was God’s way of telling me to trust him and to not give up and give in to the temptation to go back to the way my life was before becoming a Christian. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for sharing this story. You will never know how much it means to me.

  39. Wilma L. Alvarez says:

God is really Great! He takes the initiative and finds ways to talk to us. Praise and thank You Lord!

  40. Betty Russell says:

All these comments are so inspiring, my Mother always told when I was a child and at that time also had pennys to look after our Pennies and the Pounds would look after themselves. I could never really understand what she meant, but through the years of having to work for a living I found if I did not look after the smaller things that god provided I did not have the bigger things. Praise The Lord .
We certainly can Trust in God.
