Loretto Chapel in Santa Fe, New Mexico

Dear Friend,

I hope you will enjoy learning about a hidden gem in the Southwestern U.S.

Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Due to a formidable error, it was built with no access to the choir loft twenty-two feet above. A ladder was suggested as a means to access the choir loft but that seemed far too impractical to the nuns. Several expert carpenters were consulted and the verdict was the same “building a staircase would take up too much room in the small church due to the height of the choir loft”. The only two alternatives were to climb to the loft via a ladder or tear the entire balcony down and rebuild it. Legend has it that the Sisters of the Chapel made a novena (a devotion consisting of nine separate days of prayers) to St. Joseph (the father of Jesus), the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. Months later, the elegant circular staircase which had two 360 degree turns with no visible means of support was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters’ prayers.

To this day questions surround the number of stair risers relative to the height of the choir loft and about the types of wood and other materials used in the stairway’s construction.

Over the years many have flocked to the Loretto Chapel to see the Miraculous Staircase. The staircase has been the subject of many articles, TV specials, and movies including “Unsolved Mysteries” and the television movie titled “The Staircase.”

We look forward to your comments on this “Angel”.

Over the years my husband and I made many trips to Santa Fe when we would have company visiting us in Albuquerque. Stopping in to show them the stair case was a must and always people were impressed and appeared to believe that St. Joseph must have made it. What a blessing this was for the nuns at the church to have their prayers answered. The more we believe in miracles the more seem to appear around us.

  22. deepak says:

  25. Ruth says:

Praise God forevermore…….For myself I don’t put any trust in what some people call ‘saints’, My trust and complete faith is in my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, so to me God and His Holy Spirit built the staircase using a humble man, perhaps an angel in disguise……..HALLELUJAH!!!!!!!!!!!!

God bless you all and may you walk in His steps for His honor and glory………

  26. Elia Adriana says:

I believe in miracles that are for God’s glory, and it seems to me this staircase is one of them.

  27. Glenda says:

St. Joseph is a wonder worker. I do believe in Miracles. Each day is a miracle. The free air that we breathe is a miracle. The mere fact that I am in the Now is a miracle. St. Joseph, watch over us and protect us. Amen. The Lord is awesome!

  30. Rational Thinker says:

It was built by a man. That’s what the story says. If it was a saint, why would it have taken so long? Why wouldn’t he have shown up with halo or robe on? Why would a saint come disguised? Get real! A man came and built it. It is supported by it’s rails, just like DNA and so many other helical structures in this world (there are many, just look around). It’s a miracle that some people still believe in miracles…

  31. Ann Collett says:

This is beautiful! God is amazing! I believe this was a true miracle done by Jesus himself, after all,He was a carpenter.

  32. Ann Collett says:

To Rational Thinker,we all can tell you must not believe in God,why would you not believe in miracles?and why would you visit this website? As for me— I know God is real and it is sad that people like you would say such a thing. Hey everyone that does believe, pray for this person.

  33. Leela Pestana says:

This miracle strengthens our belief in the Power Of God.
It makes our faith stronger ,knowing that God listens to our cries for help and always give us the answer.
Miracles happen every day ,but sometimes we overlook them.

  34. adity killa says:

  35. shirley sonnefield says:
