Santuario de Chimayo and the healing dirt

While on my journey to New Mexico, another stop we will make is to the “Santuario de Chimayo”. It too is another treasure of New Mexico that I would like to share. El Santuario de Chimayo is an (almost) 200 year old church that sits on a simple parcel of land in Chimayo, New Mexico.

Legend surrounds the crucifix that is at the altar. The same one that is the reason for the building of the church. The fact that this small adobe church is still standing is a testament to the faithful. It is the site of “el pocito” the small pit of Holy Dirt which many people attribute as possessing remarkable curative powers.

Having been there as a young child I look forward to returning there as an adult. It holds special meaning to my family as my mother’s great grandfather carved the door to the church. One can go in and pray almost every day and what is very unique is not only the room with the pit of holy dirt but also the room that leads to that small room. In that room there are crutches, and braces and glasses and wheelchairs and other implements aligning every square inch of the walls and floor of the room. The Church takes no position on whether miracles have occurred at the Santuario, however, each year hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world either visit or make a pilgrimage there. Many of them return with their implements that represent (and in honor to) their answered prayers.

The pit itself, perhaps more than the crucifix, is what now drives the legend. The cool adobe grainy sand is available for people to take home with them. Some people fill a small container or bag with the sand and then take it home where they keep it in a special place while others place it on their ailing body and some have been known to eat the dirt. Whether or not a person is healed of their ailment is not what keeps the visitors coming. It has been said and written over and over that the feelings that overcome one in that room are the reason. I can still, even after 40 years, remember vividly the smell of that room. In there the smell of the cool adobe sand mingles with an aura that lingers from all the prayers that vibrate throughout the walls. It is there that even if for only a few moments, one cannot help but be filled with hope. That is what people take home with them. A little piece of earth that can be touched and used to remind that there is always Hope.

My husband and I visited that place about 6 years ago. It is truly a site to see. And what made it even more special is there is a story behind the crucifix. It was told that my great gradmother had it in her possesion for many years and many miracles were performed when pray to or touched. “ALL THING ARE POSSIBLE WITH GOD. ALL IT TAKES IS FAITH.”

It does make you feel like you visited a very holy land.

  6. Linda Rigali says:

I my self, believe that with God, all things are possible. I do believe in Miracles, but they have to be God’s will and in his timing. Only when he is ready, are we ready. This sounds like a wonderful place to visit. Thank You and God Bless You!!!!! Linda

  8. Geetha says:

Jesus is God.We do not need to even touch the dirt.He honors the faith in us.

  9. Inez says:

I believe in God, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE! I know Jesus spit on some mud and rub it on a blind man’s eyes and he received sight, but I’m not sure about holy mud, I don’t think there is such a thing as holy mud, to me it’s just mud, but it’s one’s faith that make them whole. Only God who is Holy. If it’s a catholic church, then I understand where that’s coming from (not disrespecting them in anyway), but they do believe in such a thing as holy water.

  10. pauline says:

The Lord is always true to His word to those who
believe and have faith in Him catholic or non.catholic
everyone is treated the same.we are not worthy to receive Him, but only say the word and we will all be healed.Holy mud and Holy water Holy oil do exist
lets all believe have faith and pray for peace in the world

SANTA FE IS KNOWN TO BE THE ISRAEL OF AMERICA THAT IS WHERE THE SPANISH JEWS ENDED UP THAT HAD TO LEAVE SPAIN AND THERE IS SO MUCH SCATTERED THROUGH OUT NEW MEXICO THAT IS ATTRIBUTED TO WHAT I AM SAYING. I HOPE THAT YOU LIST ALL OF THE WONDERFUL SPOTS OF LOVE FOR THE LORD THAT HAS BEEN THERE FOR MANY YEARS?

  12. Olive Pereira says:

Be it Holy Oil,Water or Mud, without the element of deep faith, nothing will be effective

  13. Trudie says:

I believe it is more the Faith in God that moves the mountains. Faith the size of a mustard seed!

  14. Jo Otero says:

I have been to Lourdes, in France, and seen how people believe passionately in the healing powers of the water. But when asked if I would like to enter the pool I declined. My healing will come, if God wills it, when He is ready and not before. In the meantime I must trust in Him to know what is best for me. And that is another kind of miracle, He gives us the strength to cope with adversity in all it’s forms.

  15. I believe that with GOD all things are possible.

  16. Mollie says:

I believe that Gods will is done and he will heal in his time. I also believe that he puts opportunities in front of us everyday, which we may not see it as his will and we choose to take these opportunities as a sign from God or not. I believe that making right decisions is part of Gods plan for us to think of him, ask him for guidance and call his name. Yes, we are people of faith. Holy water, Holy oil and Holy Mud, if their presence brings God to mind, your faith is what determines belief. This world is not our eternal home and God has a special purpose for everyone. To be in a place where Gods presence is felt is and God comes to mind, I don’t question it because what do we really know. It’s what we believe and feel about our Lord. Which is a Good thing.

  17. Jeannette says:

I believe that there are God’s work going on everywhere.
What a blessing to go to a place that people are given hope. Especially those who have done all they can to cure their illnesses. So Amen to the faith in a power, strength and love bigger than ourselves! May God Bless all those in search of help, cures and a means of Faith through these trying times!

  18. Arlene says:

Thank you for reminding me of this most Holy site. I
now have to make plans to visit there in 2011. I am a
Catholic who respects all religion’s. And my belief is
that when our Lord Jesus returns to us, there will be
only one religion….And that is God’s! It does not
matter in which from we pray to God, He hears us all!
Love is all important, it has to be right up there beside our Lord, because Jesus, asked us to love our neighbors as we love our selves. Go with God……..

  19. jim says:

  20. Ruth says:

Jesus is the Healer, healer of illnesses, diseases, all sorts of traumatic happenings, healer of the body, and all parts thereof…He also heals the broken-hearted, the down and out, even gives us a new heart to serve Him when we put our complete trust in God’s free gift of salvation as no one could ever save themselves, Jesus spoke: “I AM THE WAY, THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE, NO MAN COMES TO THE FATHER BUT THRU ME”(John 14:6) It too is written in Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: Not of works lest any man should boast”…”Faith comes by hearing and hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17) “For all who call on the Name of the Lord shall be saved”(Romans10:13) Therefore no word= no faith; 10% word=10% faith, then 90% unbelief; 30% word=30%faith and so on….May God help those who want that PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM THRU JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY SAVIOUR AS THERE IS NO ONE ELSE..REMEMBER TO LOVE FOR GOD IS LOVE……

  27. Mary says:

I just made a visit there after seeing it onTV. I got obsessed to go. Before I could even get into the church, the presence of God took over. I couldn’t stop crying, I have felt God in my life before but this was different. I did take some of the healing dirt with me. I don’t know if I will be physically healed but I can bet that everyone that visits there walks away emotionally healed.
May you all find the peace that you are looking for.

  28. isabel says:

I BELIEVE THAT GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE UP HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN SON JESUS CHRIST… IF OUR HEAVENLY FATHER DID THAT FOR US ,I FIRMLY BELIEVE THAT A HEALING IS NOTHING TO HIM COMPARED TO GIVING US THE MOST PERICIOUS GIFT OF ETERNAL LIFE JESUS CHRIST. BELIEVE IN HIS HEALING US CAUSE HE SAID BY HIS SRIPES YOU ARE HEALED. NOT ONLY HEALING BUT HE ALSO TAKES CRE OF OUR DAILY NEEDS AND HE RESTORES BROKEN FAMILIES. MY REQUEST FOR PRAYER IS THAT MY SON JIMMY WILL CHANGE HIS LIFE AND FOLLOW CHRIST. HE HAS BEEN SO LOST THAT SOMETIMES IT LOOKS HOPELESS.THEN I REMEMBER EVERYTHING MY JESUS HAS DONE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. SO ALL YOU VISITORS OF EL SANTUARIO DE CIMAYO KEEP YOU FAITH …JESUS IS ALIVE AND READY TO DO ALL WE ASK IN FAITH,,,, GOD BLESS YOU ALL AMEN.
