To ALL the mother’s……. Happy Mother’s Day!

For me Mother’s Day has always been especially meaningful. Of course I celebrate my own mother each Mother’s Day (who will turn 89!!! this week) but I am also reminded of my dad. My dad was born on Mother’s Day in 1917!

Sadly, shortly after his birth, his mother died. My dad was probably the sweetest and kindest man I have ever known. He was a very simple and grounded man and while he was living, I never fully realized just how much his mother meant to him despite the fact that he never knew her.

It’s rare that a child will share his birthday with the anniversary of a mother’s death but because of that his birthday was always a somber day for him.

Now, ironically, when my father’s mother was 12, my father’s future mother-in-law was born. Her name was Angelica and on the day Angelica turned 12 years old, my father was born. My dad met my mom in 1946 and for the next 45 years until his death, he and Angelica (who became his mother-in-law and the only grandmother I have ever known) shared and celebrated their birthdays together.

Ironically, again, my dad passed-on the day after Mother’s Day in 1991. He died on his 74th birthday and it seems that he returned to his own mother exactly 74 years after they parted. That was when I realized the depth of a child’s love for his/her mother. I also realized how much my dad loved my mom. He hung on for one last Mother’s Day – that was lucky for my mom – and my dad’s four daughters’. (I’m the 3rd *)

When Jesus had a meal prepared to celebrate the Passover with the Apostles, the night before the normal night of celebration, he did so knowing that his hour was at hand.

He also knew that Judas Iscariot would be the one who would – that night – turn him over to his enemies.

During that evening, He washed the Apostles feet explaining the importance to serve others. He broke bread and drank wine with them as a symbol of remembrance.

Jesus talked with them about many things that night and when it was time for them to leave, he continued to speak to them. He told them how to continue being his Apostles after he was gone and He invited them to love one another as He had loved them.

Today is Holy Wednesday! For many it is the last day of Lent – but it is also a day when many Christians focus their attention on *Fasting *Praying and *Charity.

Through Fasting we are reminded that it is not the things of this world that will sustain us but rather our dependence on God.

We Pray to fill the spiritual need that cannot be sufficed by ourselves or others.

We Give because EVERYTHING that we have is from God. Everything is His to share and it is our responsibility to share in return. (Traditionally, the money we save by fasting is given to those in need.)

Holy Wednesday – the Wednesday before Easter – reminds us that it is only through our relationships with others that we can have a fulfilling relationship with God.

In this song “Breath of Life, one can nearly imagine the emotional journey that Mary and Joseph were on which culminated with the first breath, and birth, of Jesus.

Amy Grant recorded this song in almost one take most likely because she could relate to the lyrics in a special way as she too was expecting her own baby.

Almost 10 years after recording “Breath of Heaven” she titled her book the same. She is quoted as saying, in the release of that book, that she considers (believes) that the intimate nature of this tune has transformed it into a prayer, adding that it is a prayer that fits a lot of people and their circumstances because it is a cry of mercy.

It is that first breath that we continue to rejoice and have hope in over 2000 years later.

After going off to college to obtain a business degree, Mark Lowry was completely sidetracked when he felt a strong calling by God. Instead of obtaining a business degree, Mark did a U-Turn and walked out with a Youth degree and was on his way to a music ministry.

It was while he was singing at churches that he began to talk to his audience between songs. He talked about his life and shared his testimony and they responded with laughter.

Since that time Mark has performed before hundreds of thousands with his singing/comedy act. A true entertainer, he has released numerous cd’s and videos and as of late he has gone into event planning.

In 1984 something happened that would establish him as a songwriter. His church asked him to write a Christmas play. He responded by writing down questions that he would like to ask Mary, Jesus’ mother. He turned those questions into lyrics and began looking for someone to put music to them.

It would take 6 years and 2 other song-writers before Buddy Greene would compose the music for the song that is now Mary Did You Know.

Mark’s song is now a favorite Christmas song that has been recorded by more than thirty different artists including Michael English, Kathy Mattea, Kenny Rogers, Wynonna Judd, Billy Dean, Natalie Cole and Donnie Osmond.

This song Blessed Is The Child sung by Kristen Trayer is as beautiful as she is. The song was penned by her songwriter father John Trayer.

Kristen grew up singing since she could talk and as a very young child could already sing every word to her numerous childhood songs.

When she was 13 she picked up a guitar and began following in her father’s foosteps and started writing and singing her own songs.

Already at the age of 18 she has been winning singing competitions and currenly performs at school and in coffee shops.

Through this song we are reminded of the birth of Jesus Christ and the real Reason For The Season.

We hope Kristen and her father will continue to inspire us with their music.

Leigh Haggerwood is an accomplished London composer who decided to write and sing a real Christmas song.

After being turned away by the record companies to bring his idea to fruition, he brought his musician friends together and created the Florin Street Band.

Together they and over a hundred talented crew generously gave their time and created this beautiful walk down memory lane that evokes the true spirit of the Christmas Season in 19th century England.
